Baptism

"Holy Baptism is the basis of the whole Christian life, the gateway to life in the Spirit, and the door which gives access to the other sacraments" (CCC 1213).

Baptism is the first of the Sacraments of Initiation. Through it, we are freed from original sin, welcomed into the Church, and made members of the Body of Christ.

Amen, amen, I say to you, no one can enter the kingdom of God without being born of water and Spirit.

(John 3:5)

Celebration of Baptism

  • Baptisms are generally celebrated at 1:00 PM on the first three Sundays of the month (except during Lent, or as otherwise noted).
  • Exceptions may be possible in special circumstances.

Preparation for Parents

Because parents promise to raise their child in the Catholic faith:

  • Families should be registered parishioners, attend Sunday Mass regularly, and support the parish.
  • Parents of a first child (including unborn) must attend a Baptism preparation class.
  • Please complete the Application for Baptism at least three months before your desired date.

Godparents

The role of godparent is a serious spiritual responsibility. Godparents must:

  • Be Catholic, having received Baptism, Eucharist, and Confirmation.
  • Be at least 16 years of age.
  • Be practicing their faith and in good standing with the Church.
  • Provide written certification from their parish if they are not members of St. John.

Notes:

  • You may have one godparent or two (one male and one female).
  • A baptized non-Catholic Christian may serve as a Christian Witness alongside a Catholic godparent.
  • A godparent unable to be present may be represented by a proxy.
