Confirmation
“By the sacrament of Confirmation, [the baptized] are more perfectly bound to the Church and are enriched with a special strength of the Holy Spirit.” (CCC 1285)
“It gives us a special strength of the Holy Spirit to spread and defend the faith by word and action as true witnesses of Christ.”
(CCC 1303)
For on him the Father, God, has set his seal. (John 6:27)
The Gifts of the Holy Spirit
Confirmation is one of the three Sacraments of Initiation, together with Baptism and the Eucharist.
At Baptism we receive the seed of divine life and the gifts of the Holy Spirit. Confirmation strengthens and completes these gifts,
sealing us with the Spirit so we may live more fully as witnesses of Christ.
In the rite of Confirmation, the bishop (or his delegate) lays hands upon the candidate and anoints them with Sacred Chrism, saying: “Be sealed with the Gift of the Holy Spirit.” This anointing signifies cleansing, strengthening, and commissioning for mission in the Church and in the world.
Preparation for Confirmation
- Youth preparing for Confirmation must enroll in parish Faith Formation classes.
- Adults who have not yet received Confirmation are invited to participate in the parish’s OCIA (Order of Christian Initiation of Adults) program.
