How to Confess to the Priest

If it has been a while since your last confession, do not fear. The Lord says: “Do not be afraid, for I am with you” (Isaiah 41:10). The priest is there to guide you with gentleness and mercy.

1. Preparation

  • Begin with prayer.
  • Reflect on your life since your last confession.
  • Ask: Have I loved God above all things? Have I loved my neighbor as myself? (cf. Mt 22:37–39)
  • An examination of conscience can help you recall specific sins. [Click here for helpful questions.]

2. Greeting

The priest will welcome you. He may say a short blessing or read a passage from Scripture.

3. The Sign of the Cross

Together, you and the priest make the Sign of the Cross.
Begin with the words:

“Bless me, Father, for I have sinned. It has been [days, months, or years] since my last confession.”

4. Confession

  • Confess your sins honestly and clearly.
  • If you are unsure what to say, ask the priest for help.
  • When finished, conclude with:
“I am sorry for these and all of my sins.”

5. Penance

The priest will propose an act of penance (such as a prayer, work of mercy, or act of charity).
He may also offer spiritual counsel.

6. Act of Contrition

Pray an Act of Contrition, expressing sorrow for your sins and resolving to sin no more.

A common version is:

My God, I am sorry for my sins with all my heart. In choosing to do wrong and failing to do good, I have sinned against you whom I should love above all things. I firmly intend, with your help, to do penance, to sin no more, and to avoid whatever leads me to sin. Our Savior Jesus Christ suffered and died for us. In his name, my God, have mercy.

(Other approved versions may also be used.)

7. Absolution

The priest extends his hands over you and prays the words of absolution.
You respond:
“Amen.”

8. Praise

The priest may invite you to give thanks:

  • Priest: “Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good.”
  • You: “His mercy endures forever.”

9. Dismissal

The priest will conclude with words such as:
“Go in peace.”

Do not fear. As Jesus Himself says:

“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.” (John 14:27)
